The Nature of Magick
Magickal power originates in the subconscious mind. Scientists have done much research on "split brain" of humans and have managed to prove that there are really two people in each of us. The right side and the left side of our brains each have different functions and capabilities.
The left brain deals with language, ideas, and analysis. The right brain deals with recognition and intuition. The left is the scientist, the right is the artist. Both sides are connected by nerve fibres. If the brain sides are separated they can create odd responses. The left side governs the right side of the body and the right side controls the left side. In fact the left brain is the "I" or the ego, while the right brain is the "Id" or the unconscious. (Freud's nomenclature) There are also other parts of the brain such as the Cerebellum, often called the "old brain" which some psychologists say is the seat of Paranormal experiences. However, under hypnosis, subjects SEEM to act as if the Left brain is the one who has been put to sleep and the right brain is capable of paranormal function.
In magick we try to stimulate parts of the right brain by using Alpha or Meditative techniques and by using universal symbols as an impetus. Since the left brain is precise, but not forceful, and the right brain has force but lacks precision, we have to teach them to work together. Magickal exercises can help you to teach the right brain to discipline its force. Remember the right brain responds to imagination not precise ideas, thus the need for creative visualization. Now, Magick is the result of an effect that has no OBSERVABLE cause. I do not believe in the SUPER natural. Whatever exists is NATURAL. It is just that it obeys laws that we do not understand yet. When evolution progressed to the point where mankind could think in concepts he was set apart from other animals who still thought with their instincts. Man's evolution gave him "self-consciousness" instead of "brute consciousness". These differences, however, do not mean that other species have no power of thought, for they surely do. Nature proves to us that all living things can think albeit instinctively rather than conceptually. To quote Descartes..." I think, therefore I am".
MIND is implicit in all things and MATTER is the only the physical manifestation of that reality. Scientists have proven that various combinations of identical molecules lie behind the evolution of all matter. The manifestations may be different but the essential properties stay the same. It seems then, that there is only one life energy force, that all material things share. We all have the same components and operate under the same natural laws. It is this "sameness" that is the basis for Magick. This enables us to identify correspondences and affinities between planets, gems, herbs, oils, colors, scents, etc. The primary correspondence is between humankind and the divine Creative force... The aim of Magick is to link the aspects of the Magician's mind to the same aspect of the "force". As Above, so below...Microcosm & Macrocosm. Consider what thought is...It cannot be destroyed and will always exist, even if as a subconscious memory. All things created by man are physical manifestations of what were once, ideas, or thoughts. The Magician strives to makes his/her thoughts powerful enough so they may be impressed on the astral plane. Through scientific tests we know that the process of thinking makes small variations in the electrical system of the brain and, like all energy, may be altered, but not destroyed. Thoughts are REAL things. And so, we have two requirements to successfully practice Magick. The first is the development of the brain and mind so you may imprint your desires on the astral plane, and the second is the awareness of correspondences.
The Ultimate purpose of Magick is a better understanding of the Universe and a closer connection with one's Divine Creative Force, by whatever name(s) you choose to know them.
